Some supermarkets have developed range of uniform with features such as having the seams sewn down, very soft and the labels are sewn into the pockets

Uniform Statement
Due to the Special Educational Needs (SEN), disabilities and sensory needs of the pupils at Russet House School, it is optional for parents to purchase a school uniform for their child. However, we do encourage parents and carers to dress their child in appropriate clothing for participating in all School activities.
Some children find wearing a uniform helpful as part of their weekly routine, clearly demarcating a school day from the weekend or a holiday and providing a sense of belonging. Other children, such as those with sensory sensitivities, may find certain clothes feel itchy, heavy or tight which can lead to a sensory overload and barriers to learning. Therefore, these children can attend in clothing that is comfortable to them.
For those parents who choose to purchase a school uniform, as a school, we have a duty to make sure that the uniform parents can choose to buy is affordable, in line with statutory guidance from the Department for Education on the cost of school uniform.
We understand that items with distinctive characteristics (such as branded items, or items that have to have a school logo or a unique fabric/colour/design) cannot be purchased from a wide range of retailers and that requiring many such items limits parents’ ability to ‘shop around’ for a low price. We have items that have logos available, however the School’s uniform colour of royal blue is also readily available on the high-street.
Our legal duties under the Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 prohibits discrimination against an individual based on the protected characteristics, which include age, sex, disability, race, religion or belief, pregnancy and maternity, and gender reassignment.
To avoid discrimination, our school will:
- Avoid listing uniform items based on sex, to give all pupils the opportunity to wear the uniform they feel most comfortable in or that most reflects their self-identified gender
- Make sure that our uniform costs the same for all pupils
- Allow all pupils to have long hair (though we reserve the right to ask for this to be tied back)
- Allow all pupils to style their hair in a way that is appropriate for school and makes them feel most comfortable
- Allow pupils to wear swimwear that aligns with their religion sex, gender or gender reassignment or any other reasons that may cause discomfort
- Allow pupils to wear headscarves and/or other religious garments
- Allow pupils with sensory or physical needs to make reasonable adaptations to their uniform depending on their specific needs
- Allow for reasonable adaptations to our policy on the grounds of equality
We will make sure our school uniform:
- Is available at a reasonable cost.
- Provides the best value for money for parents/carers.
We will do this by:
- Carefully considering whether any items with distinctive characteristics are necessary.
- Limiting any items with distinctive characteristics where possible to jumpers and fleeces.
- Considering cheaper alternatives to school-branded items, such as matching colours of jumpers.
- Making sure that arrangements are in place for parents to acquire second-hand uniform items when available.
- Avoiding frequent changes to uniform specifications and minimising the financial impact on parents of any changes.
- Consulting with parents and pupils on any proposed significant changes to the uniform statement.

We have a school uniform consisting of sweatshirt, fleece, polo shirt, jogging bottoms and other optional items.

If you prefer your child to wear their own clothes, please ensure that they do not wear their best clothes to school. It is important that the children have suitable, washable clothing and are free to enjoy all lessons. Please name all items of clothing as we encourage children to manage their own clothing as much as possible. We ask that children do not wear any jewellery for Health and Safety reasons.
Pupils should wear shoes or trainers that are flat and secured to the foot. All pupils will also need a pair of wellington boots which can be kept at school.
Pupils should have a P.E. kit and change for P.E. but this can comprise of any sportswear that is appropriate for physical activity.
Pupils should come to school dressed appropriately for the weather (see our ‘How to dress for the weather in every season’) advice.
Parents / Carers
Parents/Carers should ensure that their children are coming to school in appropriate clothing. If parents/carers have any complaints or objections relating to the school uniform this should be communicated with the school in a timely and reasonable manner.
Governors
The governing board will review this statement and make sure that it:
- Is appropriate for our school’s context
- Is implemented fairly across the school
- Takes into account the views of parents/carers and pupils
- Offers a uniform that is appropriate, practical and safe for all pupils
